When my husband and I decided to take our sons, ages 7 and 4, on a 2,750-mile RV trip to 10 national parks in Utah, Arizona and California in 20 days, reactions from my mommy friends were mixed. Some were jealous; others thought that we were downright crazy! We prefer to think of ourselves as adventurous. I hadn’t set foot inside an RV since I was 8 years old. I had only fond memories of my family trip from Michigan to Washington, D.C. My husband, on the other hand, was a true novice and admittedly, not much of a camper. From the time we stepped into the RV rental office in Salt Lake City, we were constantly learning and adjusting our plan for the “great RV adventure!”
If you own a pickup truck, you can become an RVer just by buying a truck camper. You will find many brands to choose from, whether your need is for something very basic or very luxurious.
At the end of two months of travel by motorhome in Alaska, acquaintances told us: “Don’t miss the bears at Hyder on your way home!” My photographer husband, Lee Smith, and I had never heard of Hyder, Alaska. We discovered that this once bustling mining town is situated at the head of Portland Canal, a 70-mile-long fjord along the border with Canada. Four miles north of this tiny town is the Fish Creek Wildlife Observation Site—the place to watch grizzly bears and black bears feed on spawning salmon.
On June 28, 1935, an American icon took to the air in Seattle, Washington. That day the Boeing model 299—prototype of the B-17—made its maiden flight. A reporter who witnessed the flight referred to the plane as a “veritable flying fortress.” And the name stuck. An aircraft legend was born.
