Several weeks ago I shared a scenic boondocking location in central Oregon. This week I will share another place from my stash of secret locations. This location is just off Utah’s first All American Highway – Hwy 12. The highway traverses between Torrey, gateway to beautiful Capitol Reef National Park, and Red Rock Canyon passing through some of the best scenery Utah has to offer. Learn more about Hwy 12 at http://scenicbyway12.com/. It should be on every RVers “to do” list. If you click on the above link you will find a map of Hwy 12. Find point of interest #13 Head of Rocks. You would think that finding a boondocking location in the middle of a scenic point of interest is not very likely. Not only is it true, the BLM encourages it, by designating free boondocking locations along the ridge! The view and solitude by themselves make this a great spot to camp, but it gets better. If you plan on visiting nearby Lower Calf Creek Falls http://www.utah.com/hike/calf_creek.htm during your Hwy 12 RV excursion, this is your best bet for a base camp as you take your tow vehicle or dinghy to explore the falls. While Calf Creek has a BLM campground, most spaces are only suitable for smaller RVs and day use parking is very limited. With the exception of one or two sites, anything over 25 foot would be way too long. In addition, it is a very popular campground and is first come first served. Now for the secret boondocking location: At 37 44.553N 111 26.821W you will find the first of several campsites along Old Sheffield Road. To get an idea on how scenic the Head of Rocks is, log onto Google Earth and click on any of the “blue squares” you will find in the vicinity of 37 44.769N 111.27.211W.
Boondocking along Hwy 12 is one adventure everyone will enjoy!
