When I moved to Washington State nearly a decade ago and came upon the town of Mukilteo, I remember stopping someone and asking how to pronounce that strange looking name. I was from Southern California and could handle Spanish names like La Jolla, San Ysidro and La Quinta, but the Indian names of the Pacific Northwest had me stumped.

In the Product Spotlight section in this month’s issue, we focus on small trailers that are light enough to be towed by an SUV or crossover vehicle, but if you are looking for something lighter, more basic, and tailored to your own needs, you could build your own.

It’s hard not to envy Brad Herzog. He, his wife and two young sons live a few blocks from the ocean on California’s Monterey Peninsula, one of the most pleasant places on earth. Brad is a successful author, whose books include travel memoirs based on cross-country trips in an RV, and every summer, he and his family get to travel in a brand new motorhome while serving as ambassadors for the RV industry.

The RV industry is observing its 100th anniversary this year, but there wouldn’t be much to celebrate if there weren’t people working to preserve its history. Fortunately, we have Al Hesselbart, the historian at the RV/MH Hall of Fame in Elkhart, Indiana; David Woodworth, who has amassed the world’s largest collection of early-day RVs, and Douglas Keister, a gifted photographer who has written and illustrated wonderful books on vintage motorhomes and trailers.

The transition began last November as we converted the cover and a few other pages of the magazine to a glossy format, improving reproduction. This month we have extended the glossy appearance to the entire magazine. You will see that the ads and photographs are brighter and bolder, and the whole magazine is more attractive.

The conventional wisdom is that people who start out camping in tents will eventually find their way to an RV. If so, there is good news for the RV industry. The number of visitors camping in tents at National Park Service sites rose more than 6 percent in 2009, according to the Outdoor Industry Association.

Although Monaco Coach Corporation had become one of the nation’s largest RV manufacturers, it began 2009 in terrible shape, with most of its remaining 2,000 employees on furlough. Within a few months, it had filed for bankruptcy and was out of business.
