I must have looked as dumbfounded as a modern day 8 year old trying to use a rotary phone as I stood there with my credit card in my hand trying to figure out what to do next. I looked over my shoulder to see if Allen Funt and his candid cameras were nearby. I had stopped to fuel the truck in the small town of Mina, Nevada. The pumps had no place to scan my credit card, there was no “pay first” sign and no attendant was heading my way to pump fuel. Could it really be that I could just pick up the nozzle, pump my own fuel and then go inside to pay after pumping? I double checked the price per gallon, well it wasn’t 79 cents, so I didn’t believe I had entered the twilight zone, traveled to a parallel universe or back in time 30 years. Lifting the nozzle out of the cradle and raising the lever, the pump sprang to life and I was able to fuel the truck. I then went inside and paid. As I headed up the highway, I made sure to be on the lookout for dinosaurs and other extinct creatures crossing the road! Returning to a simpler more trustworthy time….. didn’t you know RVs are time machines too?
