Last week we looked at Five Mile Pass a special recreation management area in Utah, managed by the BLM. Another great special recreation management area for camping, off roading and exploring is Stoddard Valley just south of Barstow, California. This broad valley offers endless desert views and camping opportunities. Several old mines provide places to explore and the mine dumps supply interesting specimens for rock hounds or just lounge under your awning and enjoy the solitude of God’s creation. Just “over the hill” in Barstow, railroad buffs will enjoy visiting the Western America Railroad Museum http://www.barstowrailmuseum.org/ showcasing the history of railroading in the Pacific Southwest, while those off us with white line fever will enjoy learning more about Route 66 the “Mother Road” at the Mother Road Route 66 Museum
http://www.route66museum.org/index.html Even if you don’t have time to stay, play and explore, Stoddard Valley’s location just off of I-15 between Los Angeles and Las Vegas makes it a convenient spot to boondock for the night. It’s quieter than Walmart and much more scenic! Enjoy the adventure.
