If you are considering the addition of a portable garden to your road trips, growing herbs is an excellent way to get your feet wet with this healthy hobby. Gardening is good for the body and for the soul, but not everyone realizes that gardening on the road while living in your RV really is possible. While you might not have room for rows of corn or growing enough coffee beans to support your morning habit, you certainly can grow herbs, and even a little produce, no matter how small your RV might be.
The key to growing herbs on the road successfully is planning ahead and knowing how much room you have with which to work. When you are staying at a campground or RV resort, you can put all of your plants outside to soak up the sun, but on travel days, you will need to have them all packed in the RV with you, which is the part that takes a tiny bit of planning.
First of all, keep in mind that rectangular or oblong planters travel better than conventional circular pots and really are a much better choice for gardening on the road. Additionally, if you have an interior stairwell at your door, you are going to be very excited when you see just how perfectly those inexpensive, plastic oblong and rectangular planters fit right in for travel days. Other options for stowing your planters while driving include the kitchen sink and the shower. Both of these options also ensure that you won’t have to deal with any problem leakage, and allow you to easily water your herbs if you are traveling a long distance.
Remember that some herbs, like basil, benefit from quite a bit of sun exposure; therefore, if your kitchen sink sits below a window, that might be your best option for stowing your container garden on travel days. Once you have arrived at your destination, you can enjoy the look and smell of your herbs after you have placed them outside to enjoy the sun and fresh air.
There are many container options for growing herbs or small vegetable plants on the road, including domed herb growing kits, which come with everything you need to get started, and a variety of container gardening systems designed to be portable. Whichever container option you choose, when you grow herbs in your RV, you can reap the benefits of flavorful, healthier meals and always having fresh herbs on hand for your favorite recipes.Research Campgrounds, Plan RV Safe Routes & Turn your phone into an RV GPS.
