How would you like to spend eternity golfing? Well, thanks to a Seattle-area funeral home, 1,281 lucky individuals will now have that opportunity. Sunset Hills Memorial Park and Funeral Home in Bellevue, Wash. recently christened its new Memorial Golf Park, a complete golf hole which allows committed fans of the game to be buried or placed in a permanent golf setting.
Designed by a professional golf course designer, the park includes a tee-box, 820-square-foot green, fairway, and sand trap. The cup on the putting green is custom-made of bronze and provides access to an under-the-ground ossuary, giving new meaning to the expression “die in the hole.”
With room for 1,281 golfers, that would result in 320 foursomes, plus one golfer. And of course, that lone golfer will always be asking to play through, since fivesomes are not allowed north of the eternal border, or are they?
The Sunset Hills Memorial Golf Park, which bills itself as “the nation’s first golf-themed memorial park,” offers full-casket plots and cremation placements. Arne Swanson, Seattle region marketing director for Sunset Hills’ corporate parent, came up with the idea after seeing the family of a cremated golfer spreading his ashes on a public golf course.
In a company press release, Swanson said, “In the ceremony I witness, the family of the golfer can’t easily visit the eighth fairway of the public golf course on the deceased golfer’s birthday. My thought was that there were likely other golfers who would like to be memorialized amid the surroundings of a verdant, peaceful golf course.”
If you’re one of those golf enthusiasts who’s always dying to play, buying a plot at Sunset Hills Memorial Golf Park just might be the best eternal gift you give yourself. This is one buried lie that should not have any regrets.
