Dan Rooney, a decorated Air Force pilot and PGA professional, always had a kind heart. In June 2006, his chance to pay it forward and help others arrived. He was on an airplane in Grand Rapids, Mich. When the flight landed, the pilot announced that there was an American hero on board, and as a sign of respect, to please remain seated until the flagged-draped casket of Cpl. Brock Bucklin was removed from the plane. Reflecting on this event, Rooney started thinking about his own family and what they would do in a situation like this. During those 30 minutes of sitting on the plane, Dan Rooney knew he had to do something. That “something” turned out to be Patriot Golf Day, and it supports the Folds of Honor scholarship program.
The inaugural Patriot Golf Day in 2007 was started by Major Dan Rooney, Founder of the Folds of Honor Foundation, F-16 Pilot, PGA Professional, and USGA member. On Labor Day 2007 Rooney asked golfers to add $1 to their green fees. His request resulted in donations of more than $1.1 million from more than 3,200 golf facilities. In the last five years, golfers nationwide have been instrumental in raising more than $12.8 million through Patriot Golf Day events resulting in more than 2,600 recipients in all 50 states and 41 PGA sections.
This year, the sixth annual Patriot Golf Day will be observed around the country this Labor Day weekend, Aug. 31 – Sept. 3, with more than 5,000 golf courses participating. Labor Day weekend is the busiest golf time of the year, and golfers will be asked to donate a minimum of $1 to benefit the Folds of Honor Foundation, a nonprofit charitable organization that provides post-secondary educational scholarships for children and spouses of military service members killed or disabled while serving their country.
A PGA professional, Rooney completed his NCAA career as team captain at the University of Kansas golf team, graduating with a masters of science in Performance Psychology. “After graduating, I spent three years as a professional golfer playing on some of the minor tours,” he says.
