Ammonia or diluted bleach can be used to treat water-soluble stains. Use 1 tablespoon ammonia per 1 cup of water or a mixture of 5 parts water and 1 part chlorine bleach. Just make sure that your carpet won't be harmed by these substances.
Sometimes a stain can't be removed by liquid alone. If something hardens in your carpet, you need to use a physical tool to remove the worst of it. Ice can also harden these substances and make it easier to remove the chunks.
