State parks throughout California have reduced services, closed campgrounds and taken other steps to reduce expenditures to achieve $14.2 million in savings.
The cutbacks have averted the outright closure of any parks, but leave some parks open only on weekends. The service reductions will continue through at least June of next year. Information about campgrounds in state parks can be found at www.parks.ca.gov. Because of the severity of the cutbacks, several conservation groups are proposing a ballot initiative in 2010 to raise money for parks through a vehicle registration fee of $15 per year.
