A national campaign is under way to discourage campers from moving firewood from one area to another. Moving firewood can harm forests.
Leigh Greenwood, manager of the Don’t Move Firewood campaign for the Nature Conservancy, said “Tens of thousands of trees are destroyed every year by invasive tree-killing insects, and one of the most important steps everyone can take to protect our natural heritage is to stop moving forest pests to new areas on firewood. It’s really that simple.”
Some states prohibit the entrance of out-of-state firewood; others regulate how far firewood can be transported. In some states, federal quarantines are in place on wood, including firewood, that could harbor damaging pests. For more information, visit dontmovefirewood.org.
