The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission has closed Wanapum State Park in Grant County because of a fracture at Wanapum Dam, which sits below the park. The fracture caused the dam operator to lower the water level in the reservoir above the dam to relieve pressure on the structure. All beaches and access to the Columbia River above the dam were also closed to protect resources and ensure public safety. Since beach and water access are integral to the park, the decision was made to close the park.
The state canceled camping reservations through July 7 and is offering refunds. Anyone with reservations after July 7 can apply for a refund or keep the reservation in case the park reopens. No reopening date has been set. Updates on the closure can be found at parks.wa.gov.
