All Dometic air conditioners and heat pump models for RVs will use a new refrigerant called 410A, starting January 1, replacing the current refrigerant, R22, which is being phased out under federal law. The new refrigerant does not affect the ozone or contribute to global warming, according to Brad Sargent, vice president of marketing
In order to use the new “eco-friendly” refrigerant, Dometic had to redesign its units with new compressors, evaporators and condenser coils and install high-pressure tubing. These changes will increase the cost, Sargent said.
Dealers will be able to continue selling any remaining R22 products after January 1 until their inventory is depleted. However, Sargent said, there will be changes in warranty or service work. Eventually, the cost of R22 is expected to escalate until it is no longer economically feasible to repair the unit, so if a warrantied product loses its refrigerant charge, Dometic will replace the R22 system with the new 410A system.
