The WikiReader is a small hand-held device that holds more than 3 million articles from the Wikipedia encyclopedia so that you can access the information without using the Internet.
All of the articles are stored inside the WikiReader so you don’t need a computer or smart phone. It has a touch-screen with a keyboard on the screen so you can type in search terms. There are three buttons: Search to locate articles, History to keep track of what you have looked at, and Random to bring forth articles at random.
The WikiReader was developed by OpenMoko, a Taiwanese company, in cooperation with Wikipedia, which uses volunteers to write and edit articles for its online encyclopedia.
The WikiReader is about the size of a man’s wallet, and contains text only, no photos or illustrations. It can be updated by connecting on the Internet to the manufacturer’s website, or you can receive updated versions on a microSD card twice a year for a fee of $29. The WikiReader is priced at $99 and is available through Amazon or at thewikireader.com.
