Over the past month or two we have been RV adventuring in the Panamint Valley, California. If your appetite has been whet for a few valley adventures of your own, let me save you from a possible unpleasant adventure. The valley bottom is below sea level with large mountains surrounding three sides of the valley and lower hills restricting access on the fourth. In other words, whichever way you enter the valley you will be descending into a large basin. If you approach the valley on Hwy 190 from the east or west, expect grades up to 9% and tight corners. Your best approach is from the south via Hwy 178. You have been forewarned as the signs below attest! Be safe and enjoy the adventure.
