Tents for Troops, an organization that has persuaded owners of about 200 RV parks and campgrounds to offer free camping to military personnel, is urging President Obama to adopt a similar program for federal lands.
A petition asking the president to issue an executive order to give active-duty personnel free camping at national parks and other federal sites will be posted throughout April at whitehouse.gov/petitions. You can sign the petition by logging onto the website.
Charlie Curry, who started Tents for Troops at his Toutle River RV Resort in Castle Rock, Washington, said public support is needed to persuade the president to adopt the policy. He said the National Park Service has shown interest in the idea, but presidential action is needed to push the program forward.
