Full-time RVer Jim Vernes was driving by a Walmart last year when he saw a dozen motorhomes parked there for the night and it occurred to him that RVers would be much better off parked beside a beautiful golf course.
Walmart lets RVers park overnight at many of its stores in expectation that they will come inside and spend money. So why wouldn’t it work the same at a golf course? Vernes thought. Golf course parking lots are often nearly empty from late afternoon through the night, and if RVers could park there, they would probably spend money in the restaurant or pro shop and maybe play a round of golf the next day.
This concept led Vernes to create the RV Golf Club to provide members with free overnight stays at golf courses nationwide, and the response has been overwhelming. Hundreds of golf courses have signed up and many offer discounts on rounds of golf, food, beverages, merchandise and services in addition to free overnight parking. The properties include resorts with golf courses and hotels where members can take advantage of spa treatments and many other amenities.
Although it is called the RV Golf Club, you don’t have to be a golfer to join. Golfers and non-golfers alike, Vernes said, should appreciate the privilege of parking overnight in a beautiful setting, and being welcomed and treated as a guest.
Vernes also has expanded the program to include a number of RV resorts that will give free stays with full hookups for two nights as an introductory feature.
More than 300 properties are now available to RV Golf Club members who buy a charter membership for $49 a year or a lifetime membership for $245. Vernes said he is adding 25 to 40 new properties a month. The locations are coast to coast across the U.S. and Canada.
“The thing I like most about RV Golf Club is you can save $30 to $60 a night on RV parking,” said Doug Dulac, of Las Vegas, Nevada. “I would use that money to have dinner in the clubhouse so it’s like I enjoy a free meal every night.”
Although there are no blackout dates, members are required to make reservations because golf courses host tournaments and social events, so occasionally there may not be any room for RVs. The RV Golf Club website includes an interactive feature that allows members to view properties, their amenities and available discounts and obtain GPS coordinates.
