For a great fall RV-golf road trip, head to the Beehive State, specifically Wasatch Mountain State Park about 50 miles south of Salt Lake City, Utah. Established in 1961 and named after the surrounding mountains, Wasatch Mountain State Park in the Heber Valley is one of Utah’s most popular state parks. With 122 developed camp sites available, many with electrical power, Wasatch Mountain campground also features modern restrooms and showers, and two adjacent 18-hole golf courses.
Consistently ranked among the most popular and scenic golf courses in Utah, both the Lake Course and Mountain Course sit at nearly 6,000 feet of elevation. During summer months, golfers enjoy cooler temperatures, while later in the year they can experience the colorful blast of fall colors when the leaves begin to turn. Adding to the appeal, lots of wild turkeys and deer call the golf courses home, while elk, moose, and other wildlife are seen here as well. From a golfing perspective, any time of year is a good time to tee it up at Wasatch. www.wasatchgolfcourse.com
Though the Lake Course is longer, it is considered the easier of the two courses. The par 72 track measures 6,942 yards from the tips, and features several short par-5 holes which require accurate tee shots to avoid well-established stands of trees lining each fairway. With eight lakes and ponds, the Lake Course is a favorite of players of all caliber.
The Mountain Course is a classic mountain-style layout, carved from natural mountain contours. The first 9-holes travel two miles up the mountain and the back 9-hole brings players back to the clubhouse. Because of the nature of the layout, there is not a 9-hole option on the Mountain Course, and motorized carts are mandatory. Along the way players experience dramatic elevation changes, and breathtaking vistas of the Heber Valley. The Mountain Course is a par 71 and stretches to 6,459 yards.
And finally, golfers visiting Wasatch Mountain State Park are in for a treat. Located at the southern end of the park but only seven miles from the Wasatch Mountain golf facilities are two more 18-hole tracks. Soldier Hollow Golf Course offers a championship, 36-hole complex built on the mountainside above the Swiss-theme town of Midway. A part of gorgeous Wasatch Mountain State Park, Soldier Hollow was a major venue during the 2002 Winter Olympics. Two 18-hole courses appropriately named the Gold and Silver courses offer challenging play and amazing views of the Heber Valley. www.soldierhollowgolf.com
