The National Geographic’s detailed topographic maps of the United States are now available exclusively with the ViewRanger GPS navigation system as an application for iPhones, iPads, Android smart phones and Symbian-based phones.
The topographical maps help campers, hikers, cyclists, equestrians and others navigate trails and explore off-road locations. The ViewRanger can be used even when mobile coverage is lacking, as the maps are cached onto the handset.
The BuddyBeacon feature of the ViewRanger allows users to keep friends and family informed about where they are, using the phone’s GPS and cellular network. This feature has proven useful in search and rescue operations.
The ViewRanger is produced by Augmenta, a software development company in the United Kingdom. The ViewRanger app can be downloaded for $4.99 or $19.99, depending on the system and features. For information, visit viewranger.com.
