Doug Stewart was looking for a unique gift for his RVing friends at Christmas when he hit upon the idea of building something that would make it easier to barbecue with a portable grill.
He calls his creation the GrillGuard, and it was such a hit with his friends that they told others about it, and before long Stewart was receiving orders and building a business.Â
The GrillGuard WindScreen, HeatShield & FireGuard is designed to protect portable grills, stoves and other appliances while you are cooking in a windy outdoor environment. Wind can cause a barbecue grill to lose most of its heat. But not with the GrillGuard. It protects the grill on three sides and when you place the back of the GrillGuard toward the wind, all the heat that was normally lost is reflected back into the grill, making it hotter and cooking food faster.
The result, Stewart said, is that a one-inch-thick rib-eye steak can be cooked medium rare in five minutes a side. And the extreme heat allows you to sear meat so that the juices are kept in and not baked out.
The GrillGuard has a heavy-duty aluminum bottom, which can protect a tabletop from excess heat, and any drippings from the grill can easily be wiped up. The unit folds flat for storage.
Stewart said the GrillGuard is especially useful in the climates of the Desert Southwest and the Pacific Northwest and on any beach.
The product has been so well received by the public that Stewart said nearly two-thirds of his sales are to people who have been referred by other customers.
The GrillGuard can be ordered in a variety of sizes or be custom-built. A GrillGuard that is 24 inches wide, 18 inches high and 18 inches deep carries a retail price of $64.95.
