There are several reasons why you might want to incorporate plants into your RV’s décor, including creating a homey environment, cleaning the air of pollutants or simply indulging in your love of greenery. However, special care must be taken when selecting plants for your RV; not just any plant will thrive in that particular environment.
The first consideration is, of course, how much space the plant will require. Smaller plants are clearly ideal for smaller living quarters. Smaller plants are also much easier to transport if you want to move them outside while you are in a campground or RV resort, or for transporting back into your house upon returning from your road trip.
It is also a good idea to look for plants that are well-known for their ability to clean the air. When living in smaller spaces that you share with fuel tanks, holding tanks and perhaps volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are found in paints, stains and adhesives, having a little extra help clearing the air can mean improved health and easier breathing.
When selecting plants for your RV, also keep in mind that the type of plant and the amount of water it requires will affect the humidity of your interior environment. This might be a welcome benefit when touring the dry deserts of the Southwest, but could make matters worse if you are having moisture problems while traveling in wetter or more humid climates.
Choosing plants that thrive in low light and do not require special care is the best way to go when selecting foliage for your RV, which makes a variety of common houseplants viable options. However, some are better suited for RV living and air cleaning than others.
African Violets
African violets can fit just about anywhere, thrive in a variety of climates and do not require a lot of water or special care. They add lovely colors to your décor and are particularly known for their ability to remove pollutants and improve air quality.
Mint
While some plants are difficult to grow, mint is difficult to kill. This makes mint an ideal choice for folks who weren’t born with green thumbs. Aside from also cleaning the air and adding some greenery to your RV’s interior, mint is handy to have around. You can crush a leaf to release the fresh aroma into the air or chew on one to relieve nausea, freshen your breath or calm your nerves.
Spider Plants
Spider plants are incredibly easy to care for and are considered one of the best air-cleaning houseplants available. NASA has actually researched the air-cleaning qualities or spider plants and found that they are phenomenal at removing carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide from the air.
