A coalition of outdoor recreation groups in Washington state has collected more than 3,000 signatures calling on Congress to designate the Mountains to Sound Greenway as a National Heritage Area.
The Mountains to Sound Greenway stretches across the Cascade Range from Seattle east to Ellensburg and includes 1,600 miles of trails. The area is popular for whitewater runs, backcountry skiing and snowshoeing, rock climbing and mountain biking. Martinique Grigg, executive director of the Mountaineers, a Seattle-based outdoor education nonprofit, said the National Heritage Area designation “would protect and enhance the incredible climbing, mountaineering and hiking in Seattle’s backyard.” The proposal has bipartisan support, including the backing of Democratic Sen. Maria Cantwell and Republican Rep. Dave Reichert of Washington state.
