It can be difficult to keep in shape while on the road. Spending a lot of time sitting and being sedentary is both uncomfortable and unhealthy. Although fitness activities such as walking, hiking and swimming are excellent forms of cardiovascular exercise, they do not provide the benefits to building lean muscle tone. As you get older, it’s especially important that you perform weight training or resistance-training activities to maintain bone health, as well as ward off weight problems and the health risks that they bring.
One way to stay in shape and guard against Osteoporosis while traveling on the road is by using resistance bands. These are ideal for those that do not have the space for exercise equipment, which applies to just about everyone who spends a significant time in an RV. Also, you don’t need a gym membership and exercising with resistance bands takes up virtually no space. Another benefit of exercising with resistance bands is that you can use them inside or outside. If you pull up to a lovely rest stop and the weather is nice, pull them out and work out in the sun! Always use sunscreen, of course.
For optimal health, work out with the resistance bands at least two days per week. If you like to break up the workouts, just make sure to exercise your upper body and lower body at least two times per week each. Always leave one day between working out each muscle. There are a myriad of exercises to do with the resistance bands. In fact, you can get a full body workout using just the bands.
An example of one such exercise is to hold onto the handles of the exercise bands, one in each hand. Stand with your feet on the resistance band, with equal distance on each side. Hold the handles with your palms facing upwards, toward your body. Hold your elbows in and lift your forearms up toward your body. This move mimics a bicep curl that would be done with free weights. Complete three sets of 10 repetitions of this exercise.
That is just one exercise that you can perform. Get creative with exercise while living your life of freedom!
