Food poisoning can strike anywhere, especially at a campground. Undercooked meat, vegetables that aren’t washed and condiments that warm up too much can leave you with serious stomach misery. Fortunately, there are some easy steps you can take to stop food-borne illnesses from ruining your vacation.
Water Filter
A water filter is incredibly affordable and easy to install on your motorhome or trailer. Pick one up before your next trip to ensure that the water supply is clean, fresh and ready for use. One filter will last a full season, so you won’t have to worry about buying a new one with every camping trip.
Listen for the Click
When you close the refrigerator or freezer door in your camper, push on it to make sure it latches. A door that is cracked will allow the goods inside to warm up to dangerous levels, leaving you and your family at risk. Listen for the telltale click to be sure that door is securely latched.
Cool Covers
Flies aren’t just annoying; they’re also disease-infested little carriers of misery. You can wave them away from the food on your plate, but the main dish is harder to protect. Invest in clever meal covers that will protect your food from flying insects.
Pack the Bleach
Carry a small bottle of bleach for scrubbing meal areas. Diluted in a sink of warm water, the bleach solution can be used to clean cutting boards, wipe down counters and even scrub off campsite picnic tables. A small amount will go a long way, so choose a compact bottle rather than the full gallon.
Check the Temperature
You may know what the temperature will be for the day, but you need to check the temperature of grilled meat. Cutting it and looking for pink color won’t be enough to safeguard your family against E.Coli and salmonella. Ground beef and pork should be served at a minimum of 160 degrees, and poultry should cook to a full 165 degrees. Steaks, roasts and fish can be served at a temperature of 145 degrees.
You can avoid food poisoning on the road if you take some basic precautions. Don’t let the misery of stomach pains ruin what should be a fantastic time. Follow these easy steps to protect your family and ensure that the vacation is enjoyable and safe.
