RVs make getting away more convenient and so much fun that more people than ever are using them more frequently for both short and long getaways. They give us the opportunity to cook healthy meals in our own kitchens or at our own campfires. It is easier to control the size of our portions of food when we can stow the leftovers in our RV’s refrigerators. When we know that we can save something for the next day, we are not as tempted to eat so much at one time.
However, even RVers like to eat out now and then, and that is when it is hard to eat sensibly, especially at the “all you can eat” buffets. When we eat at a buffet, we can’t ask for a doggie bag and bring back some food to enjoy the next day, and if you are frugal like me, you like to get your money’s worth. At those tempting times, I have found that it helps me to think about the next day or even about several hours later rather than to focus on the present time. That extra piece of cake or pie would taste delicious, but how would it affect my life two or three hours from now? If I ignore my better judgment and eat more than I should, I will gain extra calories and unwanted pounds. If I resist the temptation to overeat and take small portions instead, I will feel better later and avoid the consequences of the extra calories. Remember that the luscious tastes only last for a few minutes, but the extra pounds stay around a lot longer.
I enjoy walking, so I don’t have a problem with that type of exercise. However, we need to maintain a more complete exercise program for optimal fitness. I have found that I can make myself do push-ups, sit-ups, stretches and various other beneficial exercises if I commit ten minutes a day to them. When I tried a lengthier exercise program, I began thinking that I didn’t have time for it, and all those repetitions were boring, so I eventually stopped exercising. Ten minutes a day works for me though, because I believe a short time of exercise every day is better than none at all.
