Alternative Construction Lighting, a Knoxville, Tennessee, company that specializes in solar-powered outdoor lighting, has developed the solar tailgater, a trailer that has a solar-powered entertainment system, propane grill and coolers.
The original tailgater pictured here is in the orange and white colors of the University of Tennessee, but it can be ordered in any team design or theme. The tailgater can be customized in many ways, but the original model, priced at about $14,000, includes a 65-inch HDTV, Samsung HD six-speaker sound bar, satellite dish and receiver, and hookups for a video game console or DVD player. A deployable propane grill is mounted at the rear, and a pair of Igloo coolers are at the front to hold food and drinks.
Solar panels can bring the unit to a full charge on a single clear day. The trailer also has a charging receptacle so it could be charged in a garage if sunlight were unavailable. Matt Caldwell, production manager of Alternative Construction Lighting, said the systems could run as long as 16 to 18 hours without charging.
