A Class A By Any Other Name …. The 2010 Gulfstream Montaj
I was walking through the display area among the many RVs that were there and when I happened to see this one motorhome which took me by surprise. What I was looking at was another competitor in the smaller is better Class A market.
What is evolutionary about this one particular RV among the many hundreds was the unique looking wedge shaped front cap. What looked to be like a futuristic vehicle I have come to find out was inspired by European designs. The Gulfstream Montaj is built on a Ford 14,050 (Class C) chassis minus the E-Series van cab that we often see in this GVW rating.
Gulfstream of Nappanee, IN built the entire front compartment from the ground up on this chassis and their design philosophy as it applies to the Montaj is unmistakably unique to the RV market. When one looks at the Montaj it is not difficult at all to see how far forward the front axle is in relation to the coach body. The design optimizes the use of the floor space and opens up cabin which would traditionally be somewhat confining in a conventional Class C unit.
For 2010 Gulfstream has manufactured 2 models of the Montaj, the 27J and the 29H. Built on a 196 inch wheelbase, the Montaj is powered the 5.4L EFI Triton V-8 Engine which produces 305 horsepower. The Montaj has a 3,500 lb tow rating which will suit the needs of many owners. According to Gulfstream, a Montaj should get about 15 MPG.
The reason why this engine and chassis combination works on this vehicle is due to new construction materials and keeping the weight down. The windows on the Montaj are high resolution acrylic dual pane which are hinged at the top and open up and form an awning type of an effect.
A bunk forward over the driver’s compartment can be lowered for additional accommodation. Underway, the copilot has a computer workstation with extends from the dash. The 27J has 2 slideouts one in the dinette booth which opens up the living space nicely and a 2nd in the bedroom on the street side which holds storage spaces and a wall mounted LCD TV. The master bedroom features a full size Queen size bed.
The all leather seating surfaces add a touch of luxury to this vehicle. The wall materials are made from a lightweight thermoplastic material which are 50% lighter that traditional luan paneling. Both cabin seats rotate and swing inward which add to the livability of the Montaj. The cockpit area is detailed in a walnut grain appliqué and is very pleasing to the eye.
Gulfstream’s FlexSpace optimizes all spaces one which is located under the bedroom which allows the bed to be raised or lowered. When raised, a bicycle can be stored standing upward or any other tall item can also fit in the space. Once camping, the taller cargo can be removed and the bed lowered for extending camping stays.
The Montaj has a 30% lower center of gravity, offers 33% less wind resistance than other class A motorhomes and and has an overall height of 12 feet. All of these features define the SUV like ride quality of the Montaj.
