Author Russell A. Olsen has been exploring and photographing Route 66 since 1995. After collecting postcards and archival photos of Route 66 landmarks in their heyday, he traveled along the route, recording what is there now. The result is a remarkable contribution to the history of Route 66.
Olsen published his first volume of Route 66 Lost & Found in 2004 and a second volume in 2006. Now, he has collected all the material in one book, covering the complete 2,400-mile route, with photographs ranging from the Wishing Well Motel in La Grange, Illinois, to the Arroyo Seco Parkway in Los Angeles. In 320 pages, he tells the history of each stop along the way, and presents a postcard or archival photo alongside a current photo taken, as nearly as possible, at the same spot. Main streets, gas stations, truck stops, cafes, roadside drive-ins, campgrounds and tourist cabins are all included in a state-by-state exercise in cross-country travel history and nostalgia.Research Campgrounds, Plan RV Safe Routes & Turn your phone into an RV GPS.
