You appreciate the value of drinking water, and you drink it at home all the time. While it seems that water should be tasteless and odorless, this isn’t always the case. The water at your home may not be the best quality, but it’s what you’re used to. When you visit a new area and start drinking the water, the difference can make you physically ill. Fortunately, there are steps you can take on the road to ensure that you are getting clean and safe water.
Invest in a Filter
In-line water filters are readily available, and you should invest in one for the camper. Connecting between the water hose at the campsite and your intake valve, the filter will remove most contaminants and bacteria. While the water may still have a slightly strange odor or flavor, it will generally be safe to drink. Even if you use bottled water on the road, it’s still smart to filter the water you will be brushing your teeth and bathing with.
Secondary Filtration
Bottled water becomes expensive, and it takes up important storage space in the pantry. If you really don’t like the idea of going out for bottles of water all the time, then protect your family with secondary filtration methods. Pick up a filtered water pitcher that you can leave in the refrigerator. The water will be cool and ready for enjoyment when you need it. If you still have concerns about the water quality, then you can boil the water to kill bacteria before you refrigerate it.
Flavored Drinks
Even when the water is filtered, there may still be a funny flavor you aren’t accustomed to. You can improve this by adding your own flavoring and making the water into lemonade or tea. If you boil tea bags for the tea, then you will also make the water safer by killing off bacteria. Coffee is also a safe choice since the water is boiled as part of the brewing process. You may be tempted to reach for sodas because they are tasty and convenient, but remember that the sodas are also not a good choice for your waistline, teeth or overall health.
When you are preparing for a trip, it’s important to consider your water choices when you arrive at your destination. In-line filters will make water throughout the camper safer, and you can also filter the water a second time with special pitchers or faucet attachments. If there are any concerns, then boil water before using it for flavored drinks. Your family will be safer, and you will still get to enjoy delicious, refreshing water as your beverage.
