God did not provide me with a birth sister and I’ve always been a little miffed about that. However, in all His wisdom, my four brothers and my husband’s family provided me with ten sister-like creatures that I have cherished over the years. Over time, the family has dwindled drastically. All the brothers and many of the sisters have departed this life so now I count myself fortunate to still have five of those sister-like creatures with whom to share memories and laugh about,”…do you remember when?”
Kay Newell and Lorna Vint entertained me with family news and dinner at The Four Roses Restaurant in Plainwell, MI. Our memories go back to the days when my husband’s parents had a big picnic every year that combined hay rides through the hills and orchards of Dad’s farm. We always had a beautiful autumn day with white cumulous clouds and the blazing reds, oranges, and yellows of the maple trees…at least that’s how I remember it. Lorna later took me to say hello to and curl my toes in the sand of beautiful Lake Michigan.
Utilizing geographical advantages while staying with Lorna, I drove north to I-94, turned west and exited at Arby’s where I met up with nephew, Craig Stilwell. We chatted until we thought they might toss us out. I touched bases with his mom, Mary (another sis), three times in a local medical facility and tried to guide her in her memories (Questionable considering my memory). Yet another sis, Pat Stilwell, and niece, Judy, laughed our way through dinner at Lutz Drive In near Dowagiac.
Ten days passed by so very fast. With daughters in VA and WA, it is unlikely I will make this side trip to the state of my heart again but who knows. Just in case, I hugged them all to me tightly and said my goodbyes. I will keep in touch by phone and e-mail (for those who use it). I never regret keeping in touch with friends and family. I hope you are doing that, too. God Bless until next week.
