Blain and Kim Roberts, owners of Westport Winery and Vineyards in Grays Harbor County, Washington, have announced plans to create the county’s first arboretum on 40 acres across from their business on State Route 105.
The property, which is planted in timber, was purchased last year from Rayonier, a global forest products company. The owners plan to preserve existing native species on the site, remove noxious and invasive plants and then add plants indigenous to the coastal area. The collection will include Japanese maples, conifers, rock plants, ferns, moss, lilacs, heather, azaleas, rhododendrons and wildflowers. The owners plan to work with local organizations on the project, with the intention of creating opportunities for education, wildlife viewing and photography. The winery and the arboretum are on Highway 105, halfway between Westport and Aberdeen.
