Aerobic fitness is often overlooked by RV enthusiasts even though it is one of the easiest to maintain. The simple raising of the heart rate is all it takes to feel and look better. Recreational vehicles are big — big enough to hide a bicycle almost anywhere. There are all kinds of small bikes that fit into small spaces, some even collapse and are ready to use anytime you stop even for a few minutes. Biking raise heart rates gently, and, in turn, raises your aerobic fitness level while you are enjoying a nice easy bike ride in the sun.
Cycling is low impact, but still revs up aerobic fitness. Aerobic fitness can be measured by how much oxygen your blood can carry at any given time, and the way you feel when you are exerting yourself. If you huff and puff just climbing into your rig, you need to improve your aerobic fitness. Even small bike rides accelerate you heart rate without putting excessive stress on your knees, legs or heart. Every time you ride for even ten minutes, your aerobic fitness increases. After a few weeks of cycling in your spare time, you will ride longer and faster.
Bikes are also a good way to get around after you park your RV for the night. After your aerobic fitness begins to improve, it’s not out of the question to cycle ten or more miles, have a light lunch, and cycle back to your RV. Aerobic fitness and cycling can also aid in digestion. And, while nobody really talks about it – it can aid in promoting other healthy activities. This is the result of better blood flow, particularly helpful to men. Call it a natural form of Viagra.
You’re never too old to ride a bike. Seniors well into their 70’s and even 80’s are cycling across the country. You don’t have to take it that seriously though. Even a few minutes of biking after you park your RV for the night will improve your fitness. Other benefits of casual cycling include stronger knees and legs, better muscle tone and increased appetite. You burn more calories and look better. One other overlooked aspect — your mental health and outlook improves. After you ride your bike, even if it’s a short ride after dinner, your body has released endorphins into your bloodstream. Endorphins make you see life better, and make you sleep like a baby.
