Whether you feel like a walking pharmacy or just take a few vitamins, you want to make sure that you keep your medications secure and safe in your camper. Even the most luxurious motorhome will have limited storage space, and you don’t want the children getting ahold of your important medications. Here are some tips to help you travel with your lifesaving medications without taking up a lot of space or putting the kids at risk.
A Written List and Contact Information
You’re packing the camper and preparing to travel through the great American wilderness. While it doesn’t compare with the journey our ancestors made in covered wagons, it might feel like that when you are trying to pack and remember everything. You may not think it’s important to carry along a written list of the medications you take and contact information for your doctor, but it’s incredibly important. Does your spouse know everything you take and what you take it for? Even if he or she knows, will they be able to list it off in an emergency? Protect yourself by making out a list of your medications, the dosage, when it’s taken and what it’s for. Include your doctor’s contact information. Keep the list in your wallet or the glove box of your vehicle in case of an emergency.
Use Medication Dispensers to Save Space
With the list carefully made out and stored for the trip, you can leave the bulky bottles at home. Get one of those weekly medication organizers and put your meds in it before you leave. Rather than carrying multiple bottles, you just have to pack one small container. Easily stored on the top shelf of your bathroom closet, it can also be kept in a purse or even the bedroom closet.
Use a Medication Bin or Bag for Safekeeping
If you aren’t keen on using weekly organizers, then you want to get your bottles contained in one place. Spend a few dollars for a plastic bin or a medication bag to store the pharmacy bottles. Once the medications are in the bag, you can zip it closed and then store it in a safe place of your camper. If you have a master bedroom, keep it in the bedroom closet. This way, it’s out of reach of the children and where you can easily find it.
When you are packing for your next camping trip, put some thought into how the medications will be handled. Organizers save space, but medication bins are great for securing the meds in your bedroom closet. Regardless of how you choose to transport the medication, make sure you take along a list of prescriptions and over-the-counter medications you take. This list should also include your doctor’s contact information, and it could save your life in the event of a serious emergency.
