There is a lot of talk about going green these days and folks from all walks of life are becoming more focused on ways to lower their carbon footprint and save the planet. What many folks don’t necessarily realize is that going green has many health benefits to offer as well. For example, buying organic produce reduces the use of pesticides, while also reducing the amount of chemicals we put in our bodies. That’s a win-win situation for both the planet and our health.
When it comes to reducing the chemicals we come in contact with on a daily basis, commercial cleaning products are among the biggest culprits. While we might not be able to go completely chemical-free in our RVs, we certainly can take steps to use eco-friendly, chemical-free cleaning products that are better for the environment and our health. From making sure your RV’s windshield is squeaky clean on travel days, to shining up those chrome rims your spouse just had to have, you will find that chemical-free RV cleaning products are just as effective as their chemical-laden counterparts, and are much, much cheaper.
Here are a few do-it-yourself, all-natural cleaning products that will help you keep your RV shining, while reducing the toxins in your life:
Glass Cleaner: Mix one part distilled white vinegar and two parts water in a spray bottle for an effective glass cleaner that will have your windows looking great in no time. If you have been using a commercial glass cleaner, add a few drops of dish soap the first time you switch to this natural option. This will remove the residue left behind by commercial cleaners and ensure a streak-free finish.
Surface Cleaner: You can simply use the above glass cleaner to clean your counters, dashboard and vinyl, which will also save space by only having one bottle to store. Alternatively, you can start with your vinegar and water solution, and add a few drops of tea tree oil, lemon essential oil or lavender essential oil to boost its anti-bacterial cleaning power.
Upholstery Cleaner: Create a paste with baking soda and water for scrubbing spots and stains on upholstery and carpet. Simply scrub the spot, allow it to try, and bring out your handy hand-vac to vacuum up the dried paste.
Chrome Cleaner: To make your chrome really shine, all you need is a wet sponge, baking soda and a soft, dry cloth. Sprinkle the baking soda on the wet sponge and wipe – or scrub, as the case may be – your chrome. Rinse with water and dry with a soft cloth for a stunning shine.
